Ami: The Bridge Armchair Designed by Patrick Sarran

A Unique Blend of Comfort and Style

The Ami armchair, designed by Patrick Sarran, is a bridge armchair that combines comfort, durability, and innovative design. Inspired by the oval shape of a rugby ball, this chair is not only visually appealing but also practical for intensive use in restaurants.

Sarran's inspiration for the Ami armchair came from a request by his brother to create new armchairs for his restaurant. The designer wanted to create something new, colorful, comfortable, strong, and stain-resistant. The idea of using the oval shape of a rugby ball as the main motif came to him while watching a rugby match in Toulouse, the rugby capital of France. This unique design element is reflected in the arm, the hole in the arm, and the section at the back of the chair.

What sets the Ami armchair apart from others is its combination of oval and square shapes. The chair is made of ample upholstery fixed on four thick oak legs, giving it a solid and reassuring appearance. The elliptic holes in the arms are lined with molded pieces of wood, providing a tactile element that people enjoy. The design not only prioritizes aesthetics but also ensures the comfort of the diners.

The realization of the Ami armchair involves the use of plywood and solid beech for the covered structure. Water jet and laser machines are used to cut several pieces inside the chair, while the body is finished by an upholsterer. The legs are varnished and fixed at the end, ensuring durability and stability. The choice of a robust fabric, with a Martindale test rating of 100,000, makes the chair stain-resistant and suitable for intensive use in restaurants.

With dimensions of 510 x 900 x 610 mm, the Ami armchair is designed to provide both comfort and functionality. Its not too high back allows diners to feel surrounded and reassured without isolating them from the rest of the room. The chair is available in a variety of bright colors, allowing for the composition of a personalized polychromatic set.

The Ami armchair project started in January 2010 in Toulouse and was completed in August 2010. Throughout the design process, Sarran conducted extensive research on methods for making handmade chairs. He worked closely with his brother, Chef Michel Sarran, and the staff at his restaurant to ensure that the chair met their comfort and aesthetic requirements.

One of the challenges Sarran faced was the difficulty of making an affordable, high-quality chair in short series as a craftsman. However, with the help of nearby subcontractors, an upholsterer, and a sheet metal factory equipped with laser and water jet machines, he was able to overcome this constraint and bring his design to life.

The Ami armchair has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2016, which honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The chair's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.

The Ami armchair, with its unique blend of comfort, durability, and innovative design, is a testament to Patrick Sarran's creativity and craftsmanship. It is not just a piece of furniture, but a work of art that enhances the dining experience in restaurants.
